Black Walnut Coffee Table

Coffee table made from American Black Walnut (Juglans nigra).

Trestle tables often appear solid and heavy. Anyone who is fond of trees knows that there is a softness and a playfulness to them that is not often expressed in this style of piece. When adding this “lightness”, rather than try and emulate the tree itself, I took as my inspiration the gentle-but-haphazard way of water moving through streams.

I shaped the central stretcher to give it a ribbon-like quality, and then split the top in half and shaped the inside edges in a similar fashion, aiming to draw the eye to this hidden detail of the stretcher. Finally, I added Maple (Acer saccharum) to highlight the mortice and tenon joinery, and for little bright feet.

Dimentions: 1000mm long x 600mm wide x 430mm high.
