Develop a writing habit
Saturday 18th May, 2024
I have been writing for most of my adult life, but it is now turning into a habit.
I am an early riser, and over the years the first hour or so in the morning has evolved to become the most important time in my day. I get up early to lay hold of that time before the world is awake. Before I am truly awake. Before I have given the better part of my energy to the needs of the day.
A perfect time for writing.
There is something special about the thoughts that come when the world is quiet, and before the mind has had a chance to stir up any of its usual cares or concerns.
For the last few weeks I have been focused on writing short pieces that I have shared on Instagram - writing about my craft to connect to others who share my interest, in a way that bring a fresh perspective on what we do. I write on X (formerly Twitter) not because I have a following there, but because the 280 characters forces me to carefully consider what I say, using language as efficiently as possible.
When you write, it gives you a chance to step back from what you do day-to-day and take time to consider why you do what you do. What is it about the nature of this thing ( in my case, woodwork) that consumes me?
When you publish, it forces you to own your ideas, and offers a wider audience a chance to connect with you on this level.
So regardless of what you do, I encourage writing. Don’t write to get anywhere, or sound smart, but write to explore and expand your thinking, and to connect with others who enjoy doing the same.
After a while, it may even become a habit.
Until next time,
Stay sharp friends.
